Virginia Brain and Spine Center offers the full spectrum of neurosurgical services.  All our surgical services are provided  either at Winchester Medical Center or the adjoining outpatient SurgiCenter of Winchester.  Winchester Medical Center is a 411 bed non-profit regional referral hospital and level II trauma center.  Outpatient consultations are done at our office located at 1818 Amherst Street adjacent to the medical center.

Spine
We provide total spine care through both standard and minimally invasive approaches. We regularly participate in clinical trials including two recent studies on cervical disc replacement. All of our neurosurgeons are trained in new minimally invasive techniques including the extreme lateral interbody fusion (XLIF), which offers spinal surgery without making an incision in the patients back. Spine services include treatment for:

  • Cervical and lumbar stenosis
  • Disc herniations and disc replacement
  • Spine trauma and stabilization
  • Spine and spinal cord tumors
  • Congenital spinal disorders in adults

Brain Tumor
We provide compassionate surgical services for patients diagnosed with primary and metastatic brain tumors. Using intraoperative brain mapping techniques we are able to remove brain tumors in the safest manner possible. Otherwise “inoperable” tumors in highly eloquent areas of the brain can even be removed safely with an awake craniotomy. With a team of radiation oncologists, we are in the process of establishing a radiosurgery program that will offer a minimally invasive alternative or adjunct to many brain tumors.

  • Gliomas and glioblastoma
  • Meningiomas
  • Metastatic tumors
  • Pituitary Tumors
  • Acoustic Neuromas

Nerve
We offer expert care for a number of problems affecting the nerves after they exit from the spine.  Compressive neuropathies are often treated surgically on an outpatient basis.  Peripheral nerve services include:

  • Carpal Tunnel Release
  • Ulnar Nerve Release or Transposition
  • Peroneal Neuropathy
  • Peripheral Nerve Tumors

Vascular
We take care of complex neurovascular problems on both an elective and an emergency basis.  Along with the help of our interventional neurologist we can diagnose and care for complex neurovascular disorders with cutting edge technology.  With traditional surgical techniques, 3D angiography, and interventional capabilities we provide academic center quality care for:

  • Aneuysms
  • Arteriovenous malformations
  • Carotid stenosis
  • Acute stroke

Functional
We can offer surgical solutions for a number of neurological symptoms that originate within the brain.  Along with our neurologists we have recently established a comprehensive Epilepsy Program and Deep Brain Stimulation Program.  When medical therapies fail, we can provide surgical options to patients with:

  • Intractable epilepsy
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Essential tremor
  • Trigeminal Neuralgia
  • Hemifacial Spasm

Pain
We can offer minor surgical options to help many patients with intractable pain syndromes.  Along with our pain anesthesiologist, we can also offer traditional medical management.  Many patients with chronic pain syndromes do not explore the full range of treatment possibilities simply because they are not referred for such specialty services.  Innovative surgical options include:

  • Spinal Cord Stimulators
  • Intrathecal Pumps
  • Dorsal Root Entry Zone procedure
  • Cordotomy for cancer pain
  • Motor Cortex Stimulation

Trauma
In addition to our outpatient and elective services, we provide emergency services 24 hours a day at Winchester Medical Center.  At this regional level II trauma center, we provide critical care and surgical services for traumatic injuries to the brain and spine.  We have a dedicated neurological ICU with trained nurses who specialize in the care of patients with critical neurological problems.  Trauma services provided include:

  • Intracranial Pressure Monitoring
  • Burr Holes for Evacuation of Subdural Hematoma
  • Craniotomy for Evacuation of Hemorrhage
  • Decompressive Hemicraniectomy
  • Spinal Decompression and Stabilization
